Touhou | 東方Project

Welcome to my touhou journey! This is where i will be logging my rediscovery and deep dive into the touhou series.

I was introduced to touhou by my brother as a wee child in the late 2000s. I've tried a few of the games, know of the characters, and listened to the music a bunch, but i never really FULLY got into it (again, i was like 7, i barely knew how to read). I wanted to explore the whole project on a whim and found out how big and vast the franchise is! I've made a list of all the things I want to learn more about here

Touhou is a series of 2D bullet hell shoot-em up games made by Team Shanghai Alice (aka. ZUN, it's a one-man project). It features a cast of colourful (almost) all female characters in a fantasy world known as Gensokyo, where everyone just beats each other up with bullets. Touhou games are of the "Danmaku" shooter subgenre, which involves the player dodging inticrate patterns of bullets.

What's special about touhou is that the fandom is MASSIVE. There are thousands of fan-made games, music, manga and even anime. The music itself has it's own fanbase with hundreds of groups dedicated to rearranging ZUN's music. Fun fact - touhou is a big inspiration for the music in undertale! Toby Fox and ZUN even have a collab together.
